One Platform, Countless Families: What I’ve Learned as a Female Founder Helping Families Move Forward

It’s been a full summer at Nemu. Behind the scenes, we’ve been heads down — building, listening, and learning. From the families who use our platform to the partners who support them, we’ve gained insight into how deeply this work matters. And as we’ve grown, one thing has become clearer than ever: this work touches far more people, and far more moments in life, than we originally imagined.
When I started Nemu, my hunch was that we’d mostly be helping families after a loved one passed away. And we do. But what I didn’t expect was just how many kinds of families across varying life stages would find their way to us as well.
We’ve helped siblings divide childhood memories after their last parent dies. We’ve helped couples navigate divorce and fairly separate their shared belongings. We’ve helped adult children guide their parents through downsizing. And we’ve helped families plan ahead — getting organized before anyone has to, just so that someday, things are easier.
Across all of these life transitions, one thing has become clear: personal belongings aren’t just “stuff.” They’re symbols of memory, identity, and love—and sometimes, they’re also flashpoints for grief, stress, and tension.
At Nemu, we’re building a tool to make this process easier. A place where you can inventory belongings, divide them fairly, and sell what’s left—without the drama. But what I’m most proud of is who we’re building this for: real families navigating real life. Not just the “ideal” nuclear family, but blended families, estranged families, multi-generational households, and chosen families of all shapes and sizes.
This kind of task — sorting through belongings, making decisions, keeping the peace — usually falls to someone who’s already juggling a lot. Work. Caregiving. Logistics. While this responsibility can fall on anyone, it’s been hard not to notice that most of the time, that person is a woman. A daughter managing an estate. A sister organizing after a loss. A mother navigating the emotional logistics of divorce.
While not a perfect parallel, I empathize with them — as a founder, and as someone who’s often balancing a million things myself whether at work or at home caring for my family. There’s never enough time in the day. But I’ve seen how the right tools and resources can unlock our ability to show up — whether as a parent, a caregiver, or a professional. And when you’re juggling a lot, the tools that truly matter are the ones that ease the weight far beyond the task at hand.
That’s what we’re building with Nemu. A tool that helps families focus on what matters most — so they can move forward with more clarity, less conflict, and a little more peace.
